You're Working Out to Be Healthy. Your Leggings Are Plastic.
How microplastics from polyester workout clothes reach your body, the health concerns linked to synthetic activewear, and cleaner fabric swaps.
You meal prep. You hydrate. You show up for Pilates, yoga, or a long walk because you want to feel strong and take care of your body. That is the whole point of working out.
Then you pull on leggings that are 80% polyester and 20% elastane, get hot, sweat hard, and spend an hour with plastic pressed against your skin. The irony is easy to miss: you are trying to be healthy while wearing fabric made from petroleum.
Most activewear is synthetic. Polyester dominates gym wear because it is cheap, stretchy, and easy to produce at scale (Aya Eco Fashion). It is also a source of microplastics and chemical exposure that many of us never think about when we are choosing what to wear to class.
How microplastics get into your body
Every time you wear and wash polyester clothing, tiny plastic fibers break off. They are too small to see, but they shed into the air around you, onto your skin, and down the drain with every laundry cycle.
During exercise, the conditions get worse. Your body temperature rises. You sweat. Fabric rubs against your skin with every squat, lunge, and sun salutation. That friction loosens microfibers and presses them against a skin barrier that is more permeable when you are hot and damp.
Researchers have found microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, placentas, and stool (Stanford Medicine). Textiles, especially synthetic activewear washed and worn frequently, are a documented source. You are not imagining it: the clothes you sweat in are one way plastic enters your body.
A 2024 review of published case reports links microplastic exposure to gastrointestinal injury, asthma, reproductive toxicity, and cardiovascular events. Washing helps less than you would hope — each cycle sheds more fibers.
What polyester does to your health
Microplastics themselves are not inert. They can carry chemical additives used in textile production: dyes, flame retardants, plasticizers, and antimicrobial treatments baked into performance fabric. Those chemicals can migrate to skin, especially with heat and sweat.
Skin irritation and contact dermatitis: Synthetic fabrics and their finishes are a common trigger for rashes, itching, and allergic reactions. Tight leggings worn for long sessions create friction and occlusion, trapping sweat and chemicals against skin that is already inflamed from heat.
Hormone disruption: Phthalates and other plasticizers used in textiles and packaging are endocrine disruptors. They can interfere with estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid signaling. Researchers have detected phthalates migrating from some clothing products. Wearing synthetic fabric against your skin during exercise is exactly the kind of prolonged contact that raises exposure.
Respiratory exposure: Microplastic fibers shed into the air you breathe during wear, not just in the wash. Studies have found synthetic microfibers in indoor air and lung tissue. For high-intensity sessions where you breathe hard, that matters.
Inflammation and oxidative stress: Animal and cell studies suggest microplastics can trigger inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in tissue. The 2024 Otorkpa review documents digestive, respiratory, nervous, reproductive, and cardiovascular harm in humans exposed to microplastics and nanoplastics.
Reproductive effects: Experimental studies on polyester textiles have documented electrostatic fields from fabric-skin friction and reversible hormonal disruption in animals (Shafik, 2008). Human research is limited, but the Otorkpa review notes phthalates and BPA from plastics accumulating in reproductive organs.
The smell problem is a health signal too: Polyester holds onto odor because bacteria cling to synthetic fibers (World Changer Co.). That lingering gym smell is bacteria plus odor compounds bound to plastic. Even careful washing does not fully release them, which is why old polyester leggings never quite feel clean.
It is not just the fiber — it is everything added to it
Polyester leggings are rarely plain polyester. They are dyed, finished, and often treated with anti-odor or moisture-wicking coatings so they feel performance-ready out of the bag.
Azo dyes, formaldehyde-based resins, silver nanoparticle antimicrobials, and PFAS-style water repellents show up across the textile industry. Not every pair of leggings contains all of them, but without certification or transparency from the brand, you are trusting marketing copy instead of a tested standard.
During exercise, your pores open and blood flow increases. Whatever is in your fabric sits closer to your skin in that window. That is why fabric choice during workouts is different from fabric choice for a jacket you wear over other clothes.
The swap that actually changes what touches your skin
You do not have to quit working out or live in fear of your wardrobe. You do have to look at labels the same way you look at ingredient lists on food.
Organic cotton is a plant fiber. It breathes, washes cleaner, and biodegrades instead of shedding persistent plastic. A cotton legging with 3–5% elastane for stretch is a fundamentally different material against your skin than a polyester-spandex blend coated in performance finishes.
Look for GOTS-certified organic cotton when you can. GOTS limits many harsh processing chemicals from farm through dyeing and finishing. OEKO-TEX tests finished fabric for harmful substances. Both exist because what goes into textile production ends up against your body.
The goal is not perfection. It is aligning your workout clothes with the reason you are working out in the first place: to feel good in your body, not to marinate in plastic while you do it.
